The Question of Israel

To criticize the actions of a state is not to deny the legitimacy of a people or their faith. The conflation of these distinct things serves power, not truth. A nation that claims divine mandate for political actions places itself beyond critique—a dangerous position for any human institution.

We must be able to speak truthfully about power wherever it operates, especially when it operates in the name of the sacred.
